If you love outdoor and adventure photography, you’ve probably heard of Chris Burkard. With close to 3 million followers, Burkard is one of Instagram’s most popular photographers as well as storyteller, entrepreneur and creative director. His work includes mostly wild landscapes, surf, outdoor and travel photography.
Born in San Luis Obispo, California, Burkard started his career as an amateur photographer. When he was 19, he decided to pass up college to become a surf photographer, taking pictures of surfers and trying to sell it to them afterward.
After working as a freelance photographer and eventually having his photography published on the covers many magazines (both online and digital), Burkard became the senior staff photographer of a major surf forecasting site, Surfline, as well as Water Magazine.
Chris was able to travel to tropical surf spots around the world for his work. Sounds like a dream come true right? However, he grew tired of always having to visit the same crowded beaches and tourist destinations to photograph surfers.
Craving more remote-, wide-open spaces, Chris traveled to Iceland hoping to find more secluded surf spots. He found exactly what he was looking for.
“I was blown away by the natural beauty of the landscape. But most importantly I couldn’t believe we were finding perfect waves in such a remote and rugged part of the world.”
Chris fell in love with the pristine beauty-, but also mental and physical challenges that came with shooting in such extreme conditions. Each image captured felt so much more rewarding. From that point on he focussed mainly on shooting in such harsh, unforgiving conditions and traveled to many other countries such as Russia, Alaska, Norway, Chili and the Faroe Islands.
In the last 10 years, Chris created multiple successful (surf) books and films, built his own creative company called Chris Burkard Studio, and continues to take on projects with eco-friendly brands such as Patagonia and Huckberry.
Chris aims to inspire people through his work to become closer to nature and more aware of environmental issues.
